Spring Street Garden
This garden, designed for a young urbane family, transformed an overgrown and poorly-functioning property into a space for entertaining, gardening and children’s play. The primary challenge presented by this lot was the irregular and sometimes steep grading. In order to mediate the grade change between the primary lawn area and the rear of the property, we extended the deck horizontally to gradually step down with the grade, which created a more seamless transition and provided additional space for entertaining. At the western edge of the property, the steep grade was exaggerated to create a setting for a children’s play area that allowed for a slide set into the slope as well as expanded and leveled lawn. Plantings were used to create a strong frame for the property, including rhododendrons and river birches in the area of the shed to screen the view of the neighboring school and create a more tranquil and shaded garden room.
