The Rouse Company is one of the premiere developers of shopping malls and community development in America and have produced such iconic places as Faneuil Hall in Boston and South Street Seaport in New York City. The Perimeter Mall project in Atlanta, Georgia was conceived in the same light. The master plan for this new high-end luxury mall was developed with the idea of creating shopping in a park-like setting. Parking areas were lined with many existing and newly-planted canopy trees while the plazas outside the shops were given generous space and ample planting in order to create a verdant threshold into the mall. The central feature of the mall landscape is the main entrance plaza, which is split into two levels. A dramatic stair leads one through a sunken courtyard containing a collage of fountains, mature flowering trees and a café dining area to the first story entrance. The second story entrance offers the experience of walking through the tree canopies and looks down upon the colorful activities below.
